CARBERRY TO CHECK NATIONAL COURSE FOR BOBBYJO

Tommy Carberry will walk the course at Fairyhouse tomorrow morning before deciding whether to let Bobbyjo take his chance in the Powers Gold Label Irish Grand National on Monday.

Last year's Martell Grand National hero, who also won this race in 1998, has shown his best form on good ground and has the Heineken Gold Cup at Punchestown as an alternative target.

The gelding's trainer said today: "Declarations are made tomorrow for the National so I'll have a walk around the track in the morning.

"It's drying out very well. It's a good drying day today so if the rain stays away it should be decent ground."

Ground conditions remain good to yielding at Fairyhouse according to racecourse manager Dick Shiel.

"We've had very little rain in the last 24 hours," Shiel said.

"We had about an hour's rain at 5pm yesterday but we didn't get the deluge that hit the rest of the country. The going is good to yielding.

"The forecast is for a blustery April day today with the high wind expected to die away later.

"There are heavy showers forecast over the next few days and I think the going will be on the soft side of good on Monday.

"The chase course we race on Monday and Tuesday has not been used since last Easter and there is a magnificent cover of grass."

Shiel is hoping for around six British-based horses to travel over for the 29-furlong contest.

One of those will be Jocks Cross who has been confirmed on course for the race by trainer Venetia Williams.

Riding arrangements have yet to be finalised for the nine-year-old.

However Red Marauder is more likely to stay in England on Monday for the Wetherby Racecourse Hospitality Handicap Chase than go to Fairyhouse.

Richard Guest, assistant to trainer Norman Mason, said: "It depends on the ground but we would need more rain to go to Fairyhouse.

"We will probably declare him for the Irish National tomorrow with a proviso about the rain.

"We will also have a look at Wetherby on Monday where he looks to have a good chance. The ground would be ideal for him there and it would be nice to end the season with a clear round and a win."

"We'll make a decision on Sunday."

Red Marauder fell at first Becher's at Aintree earlier in the month and was withdrawn from the Scottish equivalent last week after seeming below-par.

"He's in very good form, he's fit and well," Guest added.

"He was not quite sparkling last week. He took a fall and after the excitement of Aintree and the parade and everything he was a bit quiet but he's bounced back this week."
