BRITISH HOPES TARGET FEATURE

British stables hold a powerful hand in Friday's Shell Champion Hurdle, the feature race on the final day of the Punchestown Festival.

With the triple Champion Hurdler Istabraq already on his holidays, the first prize is up for grabs in the #66,000 event.

Britain is responsible for five of the 11 acceptors led by Dato Star who was sixth in the Champion Hurdle on unsuitably fast ground at Cheltenham.

But with worries over the ground at Punchestown there is still a possibility he could miss the race.

Trainer Malcolm Jefferson was travelling to Ireland from his Yorkshire base to check conditions before making a decision.

If Dato Star is withdrawn he could be switched to the Flat and tackle the Chester Cup next Wednesday.

But Britain has a powerful back-up team in the race led by Mister Morose, the winner of the Martell Aintree Hurdle, Scottish Champion Hurdle and the Welsh Champion Hurdle in the space of a few weeks.

Nicky Henderson takes a pot at another big Punchestown prize with the Champion Hurdle third Blue Royal.

The British challenge is completed by Decoupage, reverting to timber after falling at the Grand National meeting last month, and the Jim Old-trained Chai-Yo.

The home team includes Stage Affair, the mount of Tony McCoy, and the tough dual purpose horse She's Our Mare.

Britain is also strongly-represented in the David Austin Memorial Novice Handicap Chase.

The overseas raiders are led by top-weight is Bosuns Mate, a stablemate of Mister Morose, who is joined by the much-improved Gingembre, Martin Pipe's Moondigua and the Robert Alner-trained Honey Mount.
