BATSWING SWOOPS TO NOVEMBER GLORY

Batswing gave trainer Brian Ellison the biggest win of his career when landing the £30,000 Tote Scoop6 November Handicap at Doncaster today.

Held up in mid-division by Robert Winston, the 14-1 chance threw down his challenge with over a furlong to run.

Staying on well, he held off Carlys Quest (9-1) by a length and a half, consigning the runner-up to second place in this race for the third consecutive year.

Seren Hill (12-1) pipped Nowell House (25-1) for third but last year`s winner and 11-4 favourite Flossy could not repeat that performance and finished unplaced.

'It`s about time we won a nice race!' joked the winning trainer.

'This race has been on our minds all season and it capped it when he was second at Epsom last time.

'Darryll (Holland) said he`d run a big race next time after he was second at Epsom.

'But we couldn`t afford another penalty, he`s gone up 14lb for not winning, so we ran him over hurdles at Kelso last time.'

Batswing will now return to timber according to Ellison.

'He could make up into a nice horse over hurdles but he`s still a bit inexperienced, he added.

Winston was also landing one of the biggest successes of his career and paid tribute to Ellison.

'It`s nice to ride a big winner for Brian,' he said.

'He supported me all the time I was claiming. His instructions worked out to a tee.'

Trainer Jim Neville had no complaints about Carlys Quest`s performance and will aim his charge at the race again next season. 'The best horse on the day won and we`ll be back again next year,' he said.

Champion jockey Kevin Darley put his stamp on the season when completing a double aboard 5-2 favourite Andreyev in the Listed Charles Sidney Mercedes Benz Wentworth Stakes.

The gelding, also landing a double for Richard Hannon following Zilch`s victory in a division of the EBF Autumn Maiden Stakes, beat Further Outlook by two and a half lengths.

Darley`s success in the final race of the turf season was appropriate as he had also opened the campaign with victory here aboard Nearly A Fool in the Brocklesby Stakes.

'I started here in March with a winner in the Brocklesby and it`s nice to have ended up with a winner as well,' Darley said.

The first leg of the brace came when Boreas turned the Listed CIU Serlby Stakes into a procession.

The Luca Cumani-trained gelding, third behind Wellbeing in the St Simon Stakes, took the lead round six furlongs out under champion jockey Kevin Darley and galloped home relentlessly to beat Zilarator by 13 lengths.

Rachel Barrow, representing the winning trainer, said of the 5-6 favourite: 'He proved last time he could handle this ground. 'He has some entries still but we might put him away now.'

However, Boreas` performance was put in the shade 35 minutes later as Coco Loco crushed her rivalsin the extended two-mile Pertemps Handicap.

The 5-2 favourite was pulling George Baker`s arms out up the straight and the promising apprentice passed the post 12 lengths clear of Mr Fortywinks despite easing up.

'She loves the ground and she loves the trip,' said winning trainer Jeff Pearce.

'She`ll go on holiday now and we`ll bring her back for some nice races next year.

'George gave her a super ride and did exactly as I said.

'He might have held onto her a bit longer but when horses are dying in front of you what can you do.'

Chris Catlin brought 10-3 favourite Leatherback with a late rattle to complete a hat-trick in the seven-furlong B.O.C Sureflow Nursery.

Neville Callaghan`s charge carrying the Montjeu colours of Michael Tabor, got up close home to beat Church Mice by a length.

The winning trainer said: 'He wants further really but he has got away with it on this soft ground.'

Trainer John Dunlop completed a 90-1 double courtesy of Lucky Gitano in the opener and Oreana in division two of the EBF Autumn Maiden Stakes.
