BAILEY EXCITED ABOUT MILLENNIUM

American ace Jerry Bailey is eagerly awaiting his rides for Godolphin at next week's Royal Ascot meeting headed by Dubai Millennium.

The Dubai World Cup winner is on track for the Prince of Wales's Stakes on Wednesday, says trainer Saeed bin Suroor.

"He is very well and has improved since last year," he said.

"Everything is well, he is sound, healthy, in good condition and great form."

Ground conditions, which are currently good to firm, will prove no handicap to the colt's chances of victory.

"He is better on softer ground but won on good in Dubai and he won a trial at Newmarket on good to firm 10 days ago when there were no problems with the ground, he won on the bridle.

"He looked a professional horse. He is different class."

The trainer welcomed the likely addition of Sendawar to next week's field.

"I like to see good horses run against Dubai Millennium," he said. "It shows how well he is."

Bailey had a distant view of Dubai Millennium in the Dubai World Cup, but could not fail to be impressed.

"He was completely awesome when I competed against him and there is not a horse I have seen who could compete against him on that performance at Nad Al Sheba that night," he said.

Bailey, 43, who has over 4,000 winners to his name on home territory, including nine Breeders' Cups, has never ridden in Britain although he has taken advice from compatriots Gary Stevens and Steve Cauthen on the idiosyncrasies of the Ascot track.

The Texan will arrive at Heathrow on Monday and head straight for the course when he will walk the track with former British-based trainer Michael Dickinson who will accompany him throughout the week.

Bailey will be riding mainly for the Godolphin operation, for whom he has ridden before, following the recent tragic plane crash which saw regular Godolphin jockey Frankie Dettori ruled out with a broken ankle and other injuries.

Speaking on a telephone link-up at the pre Royal Ascot press conference, Bailey was reticent about guessing the mounts he will have for Godolphin next week, although it is widely acknowledged that he would be the man on board Dubai Millennium.

Bin Suroor was also upbeat about the chances of Aljabr in the Queen Anne Stakes, along with Bachir and China Visit who meet each other in the Group One St James's Palace Stakes.

"Aljabr has come back from his rest and is very well," he said.

"Both China Visit and Bachir have done very well. Over nine furlongs China Visit looked better than Bachir, over a mile it would be perfect for him."

The trainer feels rain would increase the chances of Kayf Tara in the Gold Cup.

"He's done very well since York," he said. "He is a professional who is brilliant in his work.

"However, he would like to go in the soft really."

Michael Kinane, who won the race for Godolphin in 1996 in Classic Cliche, has been booked for the 1998 winner.
