David Nicholls is responsible for 14 of the 171 entries in the #100,000 Ladbroke (Ayr) Gold Cup on September 16th, it was revealed today.
Nicholls` team is headed by Vodafone Stewards` Cup winner Tayseer, who has been allotted 9st 2lb.
The Yorkshire trainer has also entered the likes of last year`s third Royal Result (8-2) and Pepperdine (8-9).
Local trainer Linda Perratt almost matches Nicholls` squad with 12 entries, the star of her team being 1998 Bunbury Cup winner Ho Leng.
The total entry of 171 beats the previous record of 168 set in 1998 with the Michael Jarvis-trained Lincoln Dancer, second to Agnes World in the Darley July Cup at Newmarket last month, heading the weights on 10st.
Tim Easterby`s Pipalong, who finished a short-head behind Lincoln Dancer at Newmarket and was fifth behind Grangeville in this race last year, has 9-13.
Other notable entries include the Karl Burke-trained Always Alight (8-4), winner of the race in 1998 and sixth last year, while Dermot Weld`s Social Harmony (9-9) could represent Ireland.
There is a safety limit of 29 for the race with those who miss the cut eligible for the Ladbroke (Ayr) Silver Cup earlier in the afternoon.
Ayr clerk of the course and general manager Richard Pridham said: 'The Ladbroke (Ayr) Gold Cup is going from strength to strength each year and we are obviously delighted to have attracted a record 171-strong entry that includes several Group One performers.'
