Ascot announced today it is to become the latest British course to stage a valuable sales race.
Following in the footsteps of Redcar, Doncaster, Newmarket and others, it will run the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association Sales Race for two-year-olds on September 29, 2001, with a minimum of £250,000 in prize money.
The six-and-a-half-furlong race will be open to fillies sold as yearlings at any specified sale in the UK and will replace the Blue Seal Stakes on the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes card.
Weights to be carried will be determined by sales price, with penalties for previous winners.
TBA executive director Gavin Pritchard-Gordon said: "The TBA are thrilled to have been the catalyst for this valuable new fillies race at Ascot in 2001.
"It is an exciting initiative which should be a significant boost to the British breeding industry."
Ascot clerk of the course Nick Cheyne added: "We are delighted to be staging such a valuable and exciting new race in partnership with the TBA, run over what will be a new distance for Ascot of six and a half furlongs."
