A 20-year-old apprentice jockey remained in critical condition today after a heavy fall at Sha Tin racecourse in Hong Kong.
Philip Cheng underwent a three-hour brain surgery at the Prince of Wales Hospital on Saturday after his mount came down in the fourth race.
'He is still in critical condition and he is in the intensive care unit,' a hospital spokeswoman said.
Cheng was kicked in the head and in the chest by the horse as it stumbled to the ground after clipping the heels of a runner in front.
Cheng, who is attached to the stable of trainer John Moore, won 25 races in the past two years and is considered one of the most promising apprentice jockeys.
