British Horseracing Board chairman Peter Savill today revealed that an announcement on a possible new racecourse is expected by early next week at the latest.
He said the BHB have made 'significant progress,' in determining whether any of the four remaining candidates would be allocated fixtures.
But he stressed that further private talks were necessary with the four contenders before any public announcement.
'We have still to talk to the four parties involved and I expect an announcement at the end of the week, or early next week,' Savill said.
The four short-listed sites _ from eight original applications last September _ are Fairlop Waters (in London), Newcastle (an all-weather track to stand alongside the turf course), Leigh-on-Solent (Hampshire) and Pembury (Wales).
The successful venue, if any, must be ready to stage fixtures by autumn 2002 at the latest.
