Balmont Flyer stretches out well to beat Carvelas at Dundalk© Photo Healy Racing
On just his second start for Joanna Morgan, Balmont Flyer brought up a double for his rider, Pat Smullen, in division two of the Crowne Plaza Leading Jockey & Trainer Handicap at Dundalk.
Smullen, earlier a winner for his boss, Dermot Weld, on Hazy Glow got Balmont Flyer to the front inside the final quarter mile.
The successful 9/2 second favourite went on to beat the coming home well and nicely supported market-leader, Carvelas by half a length.
Smullen revealed: "He probably needed the run the last day but he didn't stay the mile and a half (behind the previous winner Raydari here a fortnight back).
"I suggested to Joanna to drop back in trip and this race worked out perfectly for him.
"He got a lovely run and he saw it out well. It seems to be the key to him - the trip and the surface."
After this brace, Smullen is now on the 80 winner mark whilst Joseph O'Brien leads the way on 85 in the race to be champion jockey for 2012. (GC & EM)
