The rain was needed. I was going to declare him again for Sunday, but I walked it this morning and it was only just good. With the dry forecast for the weekend I thought it wouldn't be slow enough for him on Sunday but there was enough for today. I'm delighted, with 10st2lb you couldn't be over confident in that type of handicap. He loves it here, he's a different horse when he's here — close to home. We'll see what the handicapper does now. There are a few 60-90 handicaps that he's probably not going to get into now. We'll have to go premier handicaps now, but he's not going to go to the likes of Galway as it doesn't seem to suit him. We'll maybe go to Britain and find a handicap for him over there.

I was in two minds about running him but in fairness they have done a good job as they always do. The fact that it was later in the day we weren’t sure how much it was going to dry out but it’s lovely safe ground although quick enough for him. He’s a devil for anticipating and half the time he misses the break and doesn’t run a race, he half sulks when he doesn’t get to the front but when he pings the gates like that he loves it. The handicapper will probably crucify him again and it will take another year for him to win but it’s great to get a winner on this weekend.

He he wins, he wins well! I'm sure the handicapper will crucify him for another year now,. He's competitive when he gets back down to the mid 80s. He wears his heart on his sleeve and I left the blinkers off him on his first couple of starts this season as I was getting sick of putting them on him all the time and wanted to try something different. Mikey (Sheehy) thought the last day the ground might have been a bit lively, he looked outpaced and then ran on again at the end so I thought I might put the blinkers back on him. I said to Billy if he got the break to send him and ride it like it's six furlongs as there was a tailwind behind him and nothing was coming from behind today. He's in on Sunday over six furlongs but there is no rain forecast. I want to run him but if nothing falls between now and then he won't be running. We'll walk it Sunday morning and hopefully we can run him.

I was surprised at that. He broke very quick today, sometimes he's inclined to rear when the stalls open, but he was gone today,. I'd say it was fresh ground where he came up. They never landed a blow, he's not that well handicapped — he's exposed at this stage of his career. Nothing has been up where he went and he said he let him drift over to the far rail. He's been in great form, he's had a few little niggly problems since last year. In Naas he hadn't run since September. Mikey Sheehy rode him two weeks ago and said he gave a heave at the furlong marker but he got his second wind and ran on, he was eye-catching enough. With natural progression you'd have to fancy him today but when there are 22 runners in a handicap you are just hoping they run well. He's a character at home. We've been bringing him to the beach at Donabate every Saturday morning and I think that's helped him as well. We'll have a crack at the Scurry and hopefully the handicapper doesn't take that too literally. We could also look at the big six furlong race here on Champions Weekend.

I actually wasn't going to run him because everywhere else was getting rain yesterday. I thought it wasn't going to arrive here but luckily there was 7mm last night which kept it good and let me run him,. Rory was very positive on him and I was surprised how well he stuck at it. I thought the draw was going to favour the stands' side but I said 'just go straight' as there was no point trying to come over. The stands' side were a long way back at the junction. I just didn't see any pace in the race and said to my jockeys 'both of you help each other out' as they both like to be handy. I'm surprised how well he stuck at it but he's well handicapped from what he's doing at home and on his two-year-old form in the Listed race. He's shown a level of ability but just hasn't been consistent. He just lost his way a bit last year but sometimes you see that with sprinters as three-year-olds. The Bold Lad could be a target for him. He only ran on Wednesday night so I'll give him a couple of easy weeks now. He deserves it. This would be my biggest winner in terms of prize-money but Texas Rock won two Listed races. It's only my second winner of the year and he's won the two races. I've just no horses, I need horses!

When nothing got to me at halfway I was able to coast away, and after Niall (McCullagh on Cruella Dovil) got to me in fairness he stuck his head out and battled to the line. He’s a clever old boy and was saving a bit for himself. I had nice rides coming here today and was confident that they would be running well. You would be hoping to ride a winner or two but to ride three is great. He was due one. He reared up as the stalls opened last time at Navan and was only beaten half a length. He pinged the gates today and I told Billy not to disappoint him. In fairness he battled today which has always been a question mark on him. He was second in a Listed race as a two-year-old so he has lots of ability. He’d work as well as Texas Rock in the morning and is the only one that can go with him. It’s great to get a winner.

That's a relief and it's been overdue. The plan was to go for a maiden at Navan in three weeks but we saw this extra race put on. He'd been working well at home with Texas Rock and we said we'd put him in and have a look. It looked a good opportunity and is a Plus 10 Race as well so it’s a nice payday. Billy said he was idling in front and got a bit tired but he battled well. We can go where we like with him now and have a bit of fun for the summer. He needs to be getting a lead off a fast pace probably over six or seven furlongs, and could go for something like the Madrid Handicap at Naas. That's Paul's (Cullen) first winner in those colours. They used to be Albert Finney's colours.
