I took a lead over the first couple of fences and after that I was happy to let him roll away. He’s the best horse in the race and there was no point in complicating it. He made a mistake at the second last but other than that he was very nimble. He’s not the biggest in the world so I thought it was a good round of jumping from a horse having his first run over fences. He’s been jumping well at home and has done plenty of schooling. Willie has always been very good to me and has given me plenty of chances in the last few weeks.

It looked an opportunity, especially when Keith (Donoghue) fell as he looked the obvious danger. Jack (Kennedy) loomed up and gave us a race of it all the same. I said beforehand that he was more manageable now but I didn't think he was that manageable. Maybe he's just learning and the fact that we were going a nice gallop suited as well. He's a grand horse and it will do him the world of good to win as he's been running in a lot of competitive races and getting hard races without getting his head in front. That will do his confidence the world of good.
