We haven't seen Johnny Murtagh on a winner since the middle of November. Of course he broke his collar-bone in a skiing accident in the meantime but the Meath-man returned to the number one spot at an opportune time as Sweet Lightning added to his 2011 Doncaster Lincoln win by triumphing in the Irish equivalent (backed by BetVictor) at the Curragh today.

Joseph O'Brien (put up a 1Ib over at 9st 1Ib) certainly knew he was on a dour stayer in Chamonix in the featured Listed Ardilaun Hotel Oyster Stakes at Galway and he utilised his mount's staying-power to the max when brining up a personal treble at Ballybrit.

The rain which caused the ground to turn heavy at Leopardstown meant just four runners went to post for the Seamus And Rosemary McGrath Memorial Saval Beg Stakes, and it produced a slightly surprising winner in Midnight Soprano (5-1)Fri 08th Jun
The playing field between horses of varying abilities is considerably levelled when conditions get as testing as they obviously are at Leopardstown. Favourite for the Listed Nijinsky Stakes, Tower Rock (later reported to be lame & to have lost a shoe) couldn't cope with things whilst winner Backbench Blues obviously could, though not before giving his supporters and connections a considerable degree of worry in the closing stages.

Front-running was the name of the game in the Bennettbridge Rated Race at Gowran Park as Paul Deegan's Midnight Soprano made every yard to land the spoils under Chris HayesThu 12th Apr

He started the season out well but has just disappointed the last twice,. At Down Royal he travelled well but didn't finish off his race and we fitted him with a tongue tie which made the difference. He was still a bit idle halfway up the straight but stuck at it well. He has an entry for the Irish St Leger and could go there or another option is the mile-and-a-half Listed race at Listowel.

I'm delighted with that performance. He ran over a mile twice at Navan last year and we always felt he was a staying type,. I was happy for him to make the running. He's not fully wound up today and was very green. I'm sure there is more to come. He could be a horse for the Queens Vase at Royal Ascot. He'd have at least another run before that. He's a big horse with a big stride on him.
