That was a very exuberant display from him. I thought Dinoblue would make more of the running but Paul (Townend) said his horse was just looking for fences to jump and wanted to go a better gallop, so he left him on instead of fighting him. I was very happy with how he jumped and he had been doing everything right since her came back in August. Hopefully he can keep going that way and it was a nice performance to build on for the season. He didn't look like he needed the run, galloped the whole way to the line and had looked excellent since he came in. Normally we skip Christmas (with his Hilly Way Chase winners) and the Clarence House Chase was what we did previously so we'll see how he comes out of it before making any decision. I'm told Ferny Hollow is fine and the news back is that that he is good and came home and I was very happy with how most of the rest ran. It was nice to get them out and started for the season so we'll try and find opportunities for them.

Normally we skip Christmas (with his Hilly Way Chase winners) and the Clarence House Chase was what we did previously, so we’ll see how he comes out of it before making any decision. He (Jonbon) put in a terrific round of jumping, it’s there to play for. We’ll give him competition, it’s one we’ll all look forward to whenever they meet. Hopefully we can keep them apart until Cheltenham.

He normally wins his races with class, but today he had to get down and fight it out. He answered every call from Paul and showed his grit. Paul really pulled that race out of the fire and that’s the difference between a good jockey and a great jockey. You can see probably the end of the season getting to him. Paul said he wasn’t as sharp as his last run at Cheltenham and he missed two fences which isn’t like him. Maybe it was the colour of the fences today!. I was delighted with Chacun Pour Soi. We had been trying different distances and it wasn’t working so we said today we’d come back to two miles. We’ll see what we do with him now and have a word with Rich (Ricci, owner).

I was a little worried passing the winning post the first time as his eye was caught by something. The end result was great but I don't know if he was feeling something or was looking at the gate or crossing the road but definitely I wasn't happy with the way he went around the bend passing the stands. Paul thought he was idling in front - he was probably in front on his own and there was nothing to make him race. He loves jumping, has a great appetite for it and you are lucky when you have a horse like that. We won't make any plans, he is in at Christmas, at the Dublin Racing Festival and the Ascot race is there but we won't make any decision until we see how he comes out of this.

Chacun Pour Soi has had a great career and hopefully he'll win more races but I think we've seen the new champion here today. The ground would have suited most of the other horses in the race but I wasn't sure whether it would suit Energumene but he went on it today anyhow. On this ground that was a tremendous performance. Patrick (Mullins, jockey on Chacun Pour Soi) was setting it up in front and Energumene loved it and was just jumping up beside Chacun Pour Soi. we'll plan next year with both horses and probably go down different paths. I thought Chacun had his chance landing over the second last and I thought 'the race is on here' but Energumene just found so much in the tank. On this ground, to me, that was as good if not better than he ever did before. He just seems to be improving with racing and he's learning all the time. We learned an awful lot from Ascot, we learned more about how to ride him and have more confidence in him. That's the way Paul has been doing it now and it's worked twice since. He's by the same sire (Denham Red) as Un De Sceaux and looked like he might be a similar sort but he has a lot more speed than we gave him credit for. The fact that he was able to come off a pace like that shows the speed, he was still able to gallop away from them and show speed going down to the last fence. It tells me that he's improving all the time.

We just thought we got the tactics completely wrong at Ascot so the plan today was to follow Shishkin. The problem Paul then had was you could see after two fences Shishkin wasn’t handling the ground so it then became a case of when was Paul going to forget about Shishkin and ride the race. Nico was wise in pulling Shishkin up, you could clearly see he hated the ground. I was very disappointed to see Chacun Pour Soi go out of the race when he did. I was gutted for Patrick (Mullins) because he appeared to be loving it. He might have given him a race. At every stage, though, Energumene seemed to be cantering and these extreme conditions suit him. He probably has more speed than we thought, at Ascot we felt after the race we should have waited rather than make all. That was the only plan I could come up with to turn the tables on Shishkin. It was a bit of an anti-climax for the neutrals but it was more nerve-wracking for me because you could see he was travelling the whole way.

He was giving away a penalty and he (O'Keeffe) thinks he'll improve loads. In fairness Notebook is a Grade 1 horse, he has had a run and finished last. Sean started some time during the summer when he rode a few winners for us and now comes in a few times a week riding work and schooling. We have plenty jockeys and horses on the team and we do our best to share the love around!

I thought that was a helluva performance from a novice. He jumped and galloped and gave no quarter to any horse,. You couldn't ask for anything more, he probably stood a little far back off the last and Paul said he stood a bit far off another fence but other than that it was as good as you'd get from a horse having his third run over fences. He went a good even gallop in front and the time tells you how good a performance it was. I was hoping that the way he gallops and jumps he would be a two-miler but any horse that can do that is going to surprise you. Obviously when you get that type of performance you're delighted as you don't ever expect that. He's every inch a chaser to look at. If you were going to draw a picture of a chaser he's the one you'd draw.

He loves chasing and Paul was very taken with him which has to be a good sign. We’ll probably find something for him around Christmas,. Paul said he wouldn’t mind going back in trip but he could easily go up in trip as he has a nice relaxed way of galloping.

That was Paul's 100th winner of the year so that's good. It was the minimum of effort for him and he jumped fantastic when he was going at racing speed. He showed that he was able to put quick ones in when he was going slower and then when he quickened up he jumped really well. We'll hopefully get another two runs into him between now and Punchestown where he'll go for the novice hurdle. He could easily go out in trip. He's a horse, I hope, for novice chasing next year.
