The rain which caused the ground to turn heavy at Leopardstown meant just four runners went to post for the Seamus And Rosemary McGrath Memorial Saval Beg Stakes, and it produced a slightly surprising winner in Midnight Soprano (5-1)Fri 08th Jun
It's well-documented that the progeny of Orpen generally go well in deep ground and with Pat Flynn's runners showing good form lately Louisville Lip's 7/1 success in the RSM Farrell Grant Sparks Handicap shouldn't have come as any surprise to anyone as Fran Berry doubled his score on the evening, this time in the J P McManus silks at Leopardstown.
Fri 08th Jun
The playing field between horses of varying abilities is considerably levelled when conditions get as testing as they obviously are at Leopardstown. Favourite for the Listed Nijinsky Stakes, Tower Rock (later reported to be lame & to have lost a shoe) couldn't cope with things whilst winner Backbench Blues obviously could, though not before giving his supporters and connections a considerable degree of worry in the closing stages.

I think he knew where the horse gate was as he had his ears pricked and had plenty left in the tank. Joseph O'Brien's horse (Tower Rock) stopped dead five furlongs out and left me in front. When I gave him a smack on his left hand side he veered but he kept going.

Backbench Blues is a smasher. That wasn't exactly the plan - Plan B was to make the running! . He'll go 1m2f and probably in time a mile and a half. He is like all those Big Bad Bobs, he is never beaten. He'll go handicapping now and we'll take it from there. If there's a 1m2f handicap at The Curragh on Guineas weekend, that would suit as the owner (Cristina Patino, Anamoine Stud) is coming over.

I though he was going to be last when he was shoved along after around three furlongs! But he hated the ground and the trip was too sharp for him. He is a smashing horse and I think he will be Listed class next season. He is a full brother to Banksters Bonus.
