He fluffed one fence but did everything else right. Paul said he was just a bit idle in front. I’d like to get another run into him but we’ll have to see (how he is). Burrow Saint ran a cracker and I thought he was going to be a danger but when Paul pressed the button it was all over. Brahma Bull ran well for a horse that would probably hate that ground. Acapella Bourgeois was disappointing so we’ll have to see what we do with him.

it's a big relief- it was nerve-wracking watching him going around there. He jumped very well and Paul said he was just so idle on his own in the middle of the race, he didn't even think he was in race. He had to roust him up down the back but once he got racing he was fine. Lack of company was a bigger worry for Paul than anything else. the ground is very, very testing out there. We are happy with his performance, he did what he was asked to do. We just hope now that he comes out of it sound and well and we will plan for the Festival. That's the first hurdle jumped anyway. Half way around today I was thinking it would have been easier to go to Leopardstown because there would be less focus on him. When you come here you have to win and you have to win nicely and he did all those things. I usually like to do what has worked before and hopefully it will work again. A lot of ours are improving for their first run of the year and I'm expecting him to do the same.

At the top of the hill he started to jump better — I ended up in front sooner than I wanted, but I was able to hang on and he produced at the last. It was completely different to last year, but most importantly it was the same result. He’s a legend, he has everything — guts along with class. It’s fantastic, an absolutely unbelievable day. That man there on the screen, Paul Townend — people said he was under pressure. Paul does his own thing, he probably rides better under a little bit of pressure — really really good from him. It’s not easy to take over from someone like Ruby Walsh, but Paul’s gone and stamped his authority this season in Ireland riding for our yard, so I’m really delighted for him. I left him alone, I asked what he was going to do. I think the horse wanted a bit more of the action as it unfolded, he didn’t disappoint the horse. He let the horse do it and that’s a rider riding with huge confidence. It worked out, so I’m really happy and delighted for Paul.

He jumped well and Paul was positive on him. He got a good blow into him and I couldn’t be happier the way the day worked out.

We have four runners — and depending on what happens on the day, any one could win. Bellshill put in a huge performance, I thought, the last day — and he’s improving. Cheltenham hasn’t been his luckiest place. Maybe this is the year that he’s going to change that. Kemboy is improving too. We didn’t run him in the Irish Gold Cup. Maybe we should have done, but I felt he’d done enough at Christmas and we’d just get him ready for this race. It’s a funny year. Lots of form has been turned upside down — and it’s quite an open Gold Cup, I think. He goes there with a good chance.

I’ve got used to the disappointment of finishing second. I thought Bellshill would take a lot of beating, but Ruby (Walsh) wasn’t happy with him and pulled him up early. To have three of the four runners out of the race before they came to the second-last first time round — I was depending on one. Every time I looked at Paul, his body language told me was very happy and the horse was relaxed. When he came over the last, I just looked at the winning post and thought nothing would come and get him unless he stops or runs out or something like that. I was here when my dad (Paddy Mullins) won with Dawn Run and I didn’t get home for two days. I sort of resigned myself to never winning a Gold Cup. Certain jockeys may never win the feature race of their lives, like the Grand National or the Champion Hurdle. I thought maybe I’m not going to be lucky.

It looks a strong race — more like a Grade Two than a Listed race — but I suppose the ground is soft in Tramore, which suits these staying chasers. We run the three of them, as we’re getting into 2019 and we need to get these horses out. Al Boum Photo would probably be the pick of them on last season’s form. He’s a Grade One winner and we hope he could be a Gold Cup horse. The worry would be our horses that ran over Christmas that hadn’t had a run this season looked like they needed it. Our three Grade One winners in Leopardstown — Aramon, Kemboy and Sharjah — had all had a run. We want to see Total Recall jumping well as his jumping let him down at the end of last season. A good, clear round would be good for him. Invitation Only needs to improve.

He deserved that as he was unlucky at Christmas and David gave him a great ride and kept a little bit up his sleeve. It’s nice to get a good winner for Mrs Donnelly. I think he wants a longer trip and that’s why he was staying on at the end. I think the first four will all be three-mile chasers down the line.

That was a great performance. Paul said he was very green and wanted every inch of it. We will probably move him up to three miles at Punchestown. He's learning all the time. Jumping is his game and he'll go chasing next season. I was hoping he would go well but that is better than I thought he was at this stage of his career. I haven't spoken to Ruby yet but Invitation Only moved nicely into the straight and then went out like a light. There may be something wrong with him. Livelovelaugh got into a bit of trouble but then ran on nicely.

I’d say the first and second will both go out in trip to two and a half miles. Caro Des Flos might even go further. They both jumped well enough, and Al Boum Photo could come back here for the Michael Purcell. He’ll probably get an entry in the Neptune or Albert Bartlett but coming back here could be a good plan for him.
