An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Nine Altars (IRE), ridden by Miss Charlotte Dun and trained by Mrs E Dun, which raced held up detached from the rest of the field before being asked for an effort after the final fence, to finish second beaten 2½ lengths.

The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race, and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding during routine testing failed to reveal any abnormalities.

The rider stated her instructions were to settle the gelding as he has in the past ran very freely and struggled to get home.

She further stated that she felt that the other runners had gone off too quickly on the Soft, Heavy in places ground, and she was confident they would tire in the closing stages.

The trainer confirmed the instructions given and agreed that the gelding tends to run free if not dropped in.

Dun was suspended for 12 days for seriously misjudging the way in which she had ridden Nine Altars (IRE), in that having sat too far behind the other runners without making sufficient effort to make up ground, she only asked the gelding for a serious effort after jumping the final fence, where upon the gelding ran on strongly to take second place on the line.
