- Stewards Report
Leaving the stalls My Joker (IRE), placed third, lugged sharply left-handed hampering Arriannie (GB), unplaced, which in turn inconvenienced Next Second (GB), unplaced, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved and had not improved the placing of My Joker (IRE).
An enquiry was held to consider interference approximately a furlong after the start involving My Joker (IRE), placed third, ridden by Robert Havlin, Brazen Akoya (GB), placed sixth, ridden by Christian Howarth and Golden Gal (IRE), placed fifth, ridden by James Sullivan.
Sullivan was cautioned for careless riding as he had allowed his mount to edge slightly left-handed without being sufficiently clear of Brazen Akoya (GB), which was carried off its intended line onto My Joker (IRE), resulting in Havlin briefly steadying to avoid heels.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Lord Gorgeous (IRE), ridden by George Downing and trained by David Evans, which raced at the rear of the field after being slowly away, before staying on from an unpromising position under apparent considerate handling to finish eighth of ten runners, beaten 7¾ lengths.
The rider was interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated his instructions were to drop Lord Gorgeous (IRE) out early, as he has a history of running keenly and to make his finishing effort as late as possible.
Downing reported at scales that Lord Gorgeous (IRE) had jumped awkwardly from the stalls and ran too freely throughout, before hanging left-handed in the home straight.
He continued by explaining that despite missing the break, which enabled him to drop in from stall 10 and find cover, the gelding had refused to settle through the early stages.
Downing added that approximately 3 furlongs out, he had considered improving his position to the inside of Arriannie (GB) when that runner was wandering about in front of him and moved at least three horse widths off the rail, however he was reluctant to do so as he had limited control of his mount and regardless ARIANNIE had shifted left-handed in front of him when clear and resumed its position one-horse off the rail.
Downing further added thereafter he stayed following ARIANNIE approaching and rounding the home turn with a view to mounting his challenge entering the home straight, which he acknowledged in hindsight was not a high percentage option as Arriannie (GB) was an outsider that wasn't taking him into the race and this assisted the field in getting first run on him, however he maintained that the wayward racing manners of Arriannie (GB) had caused him to be indecisive about committing to go either inside or outside that runner.
Downing explained that when he was finally able to place Lord Gorgeous (IRE) under pressure in the home straight, the gelding had hung badly left-handed, which made it difficult to be as vigorous as he would have liked, due to having problems with keeping the gelding straight.
His explanations were noted.
