An enquiry was held to consider whether Brendan Powell, the rider of Smiths Cross (IRE), which fell at the last fence, had continued in the race when his horse appeared to be exhausted.
The rider was interviewed, and recordings of the incident were viewed.
The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider’s explanation was accepted that he felt Smiths Cross (IRE) had jumped the previous three fences in the home straight adequately and had idled on the approach to the final fence, but he felt the gelding always had enough in the tank to finish its race.
