Permission was given for Big Cheese (FR) to go early to post.
An enquiry was held into the riding of Where's Jeff (GB), ridden by Billy Garritty and trained by Michael & David Easterby, which having jumped from stall 1 was restrained and shortly thereafter elected to race in isolation on the far side rail before rejoining the group on the bend leaving the back straight and finishing last of the nine runners, beaten by 19¼ lengths.
The rider was interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding, during routine testing, failed to reveal any abnormalities other than Where's Jeff (GB) had lost its right-fore shoe.
The rider stated that having walked the track with the trainer prior to racing, his instructions were to go in search of what was, in their opinion, the quicker ground on the far rail from 1 mile 4 furlongs to the 6 furlong marker, before tracking back to rejoin the field on the inside running rail.
Garritty added that he felt he was able to ride to instructions but Where's Jeff (GB) lost a shoe approximately 6 furlongs out and hung left-handed thereafter.
He further added that having returned to the group of runners he felt the gelding had no more to give and rode Where's Jeff (GB) hands and heels to the line.
Having heard his evidence, Garritty’s explanation was noted.
