Donagh O’Connor partnered his first winner when keeping Miller Beach up to his work to land the Naas Apprentice Handicap over a mile.

With a quarter of a mile to race, fully 10 of the 11 runners held a chance of victory. It was Miller Beach who made the best way home though. He faced a stern challenge from Mezogiorno and Sean Corby on his inner in the final furlong, but the winning margin was a head.

Trainer Johnny Levins said: “That’s brilliant, it’s a special day! I think this young lad is going to be a top-class rider. He’s so cool and confident. Even when he is riding work at home his input is invaluable.

“Today is all about Donagh and I’m proud and delighted. I hope now I can keep giving him winners.”

O’Connor is 16 and from New Ross, Co Wexford. He spent a couple of seasons with Jim Bolger.

The 5/1 co favourites were the first three home. The on-course money came for Yava who was backed from 13/2 down to 5/1 and he came home third.
