Guy another reserve to collect in dramatic contest

The second division of the Adare Manor Opportunity Maiden Hurdle also went to a reserve as Elusive Guy swooped on the run-in to land the spoils.

The Jarlath Fahey-trained gelding was held up in mid-division, in the two-miler, by Peter Smithers and still had plenty to do when asked for an effort turning for home.

There was drama at the penultimate flight as the leader Phils Choice ran out through the wing and rail, leaving Hi Ski in the lead.

Elusive Guy had jumped into the second spot at that stage and galloped on strongly to chase down Hi Ski on the run-in and record a two-and-a-quarter length win at odds of 22/1.

The second reserve had hinted at ability in bumpers, finishing third and fourth, and was making his hurdling bow.

"He is a homebred and had nice form in bumpers. He was getting a bit stale in bumpers so we said we'd switch to hurdles and he had schooled very well. He probably needs that soft ground,” said Fahey.

"The lads (22-member Oakroom Racing Club, from Donegal to Kerry) have had plenty success for 10 or 12 years, came to me recently when buying into him so it is great to get them a winner.

"He isn't good enough for novice races at this time of year so we'll see what the handicapper gives him and make a plan from there."
