The William McLernon-trained Mi Lucky Cailin got up late on to spring a 66/1 shock in the concluding fillies bumper at Galway this afternoon.
5/6 favourite Mel Monroe looked set to make a winning start for Gordon Elliott and give the trainer a treble on the day when kicking on turning for home in the two-miler.
She was chased down by debutante Mi Lucky though as Aine O'Connor got a good tune from the Milan filly in the closing stages to get up for a length-and-a-quarter success.
It was a first winner since March 2012 for the trainer and he said:-
"She is a smart mare and it wasn't really a surprise. She was very impressive in a schooling bumper at Limerick Junction 10 days ago and is tough, genuine and loves pleasing you.
"She is a full-sister to Scarface who is running tomorrow and we'll have to see what the boys (Deadman's Inn Syndicate) think now but she is well ahead of schedule."
He added:- "My father worked for the Turf Club, was a course inspector here and won the amateur handicap at the festival here in 1968 and '69.
"We have half a dozen point to pointers in training and you need horses like this!"
