Mayaadeen the 8/13 favourite, was unable to reel in Beckwith Place in the extended seven furlong maiden at Tipperary.
Beckwith Place and Ronan Whelan went for home a furlong and a half out as Mayaadeen and Leigh Roche began to close into second.
Beckwith Place (7/2) kept finding along the rail as Mayaadeen cut into the lead throughout the final furlong but there was half a length between the pair at the line.
Trainer Tracey Collins said: "He's a lovely horse and we've always liked him. We just made a decision to come down here because the ground was a little bit easier for him.
“I don't know where we are going with him next but hopefully he'll improve from that.
“He's a big horse and he's on the up. Ronan gave him a lovely ride because mentally he's a little bit immature. That race will improve him every way hopefully, mentally and physically.
“His run in Gowran was a good one and he's one to look forward to.”
Mayaadeen was starting out on his career and cost 750,000 euro as a yearling. He holds an Irish 2,000 Guieas entry.
Meanwhile, this was Beckwith Place's second start after he showed promise when fourth at 33/1 in a maiden at Gowran Park in October.
