An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Cypress Creek (IRE), ridden by Donnacha O’Brien and trained by Aidan O’Brien, which helped force a strong pace, before weakening rapidly inside the final 3 furlongs to finish fifth, beaten by 27 ½ lengths.

The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Handicapper offered observations.

The rider stated his instructions were to bounce the colt out and make use of him early as he is a proven stayer, however, despite riding Cypress Creek (IRE) along from leaving the stalls, he was unable to prevent Warnaq (IRE) from crossing to the lead at the first bend.

He added that to ensure the gallop remained even, he elected to improve his position upsides Warnaq (IRE) and apply pressure.

He further added that he pressed on when Warnaq (IRE) commenced to weaken near the 6-furlong marker and reported at Scales that Cypress Creek (IRE) had stopped quickly on the Soft ground, this being its first run for 201 days.

Donnacha O’Brien explained that when he rode Cypress Creek (IRE) over a similar trip at Leopardstown last year, despite making the running, the colt was off the bridle for much of the race, and it was felt the pace was not quick enough on that occasion.

The trainer stated that he was satisfied that the ride given was in accordance with his instructions.

Subsequently, the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Their explanations were noted.

Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that Magic Circle (IRE), placed third, had lost its left hind shoe.
