Apache Blaze (GB), trained by Robyn Brisland, ran without its left-fore shoe as the trainer had not indicated at declaration stage that the mare should be withdrawn in the event of losing a shoe on the way to post.
An enquiry was held to consider interference shortly after the start when the winner Flying Standard (IRE), ridden by George Wood, interfered with Savoy Brown (GB), unplaced, ridden by Robert Havlin.
The interference was found to be accidental as the free running Savoy Brown (GB), which Havlin had wanted to drop in behind runners, had locked on when Flying Standard (IRE) had edged marginally left when clear, causing Havlin to take a precautionary check off heels.
The apparent improvement in form of the winner, Flying Standard (IRE), which had never previously been placed, was considered.
Chris Wall explained that the gelding benefited from gaining a more prominent position on a flat galloping track.
His explanation was noted and Flying Standard (IRE) was routine tested.
Eoin Walsh, the rider of Percy Toplis (GB)S, placed fourth, was suspended for 2 days for using his whip with excessive force inside the final ½ furlong.
Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that Savoy Brown (GB), unplaced, lost its left-fore shoe.
