Winchester put himself into the Irish Derby picture with a one and three quarter length victory completing a treble for the formidable Dermot Weld and Pat Smullen. Winchester was held up in mid division before creeping closer from three furlongs out. He went on from the furlong pole to win well at the death beating the Aidan O'Brien pair of Moonstone and William Hogarth.

Weld is hopeful that this well bred three-year-old will go on to score in Group company in his Classic year and he earmarked a Derby trial and the Irish Derby for the son of Theatrical.

It was a nice introduction by Moonstone who stayed on to be second just denying her stable mate having tracked Winchester most of the way and just not managing to go with the winner when it mattered.

William Hogarth showed more promise here than his two efforts as a two-year-old but only time will tell how strong a maiden this race will turn out to be while Always Beautiful, trained by David Wachman but running for the Coolmore operation ran a more pleasing race in fourth.

Galiyan ran a nice debut, just tiring late in the day on the dead ground and Decree was the only non runner, he was reported lame by Aidan O'Brien.
