An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Bhutan (IRE), ridden by Jonjo O’Neill Jnr and trained by Jonjo O’Neill, which after settling towards the rear early and improving its position on the final circuit, then appeared to be tenderly handled after jumping the third last hurdle to finish seventh of eleven, beaten 27 lengths.

The rider and the trainer’s representative were interviewed and shown recordings of the race; and the Veterinary Officer reported that the gelding had lost its right fore shoe and was lame on the same leg.

The rider stated his instructions were to ride Bhutan (IRE) in mid division and then do his best to achieve the best possible position.

He added he was a little outpaced due to a strong early pace, but was happy with the way the gelding was travelling and Bhutan (IRE) was jumping well.

When asked why he had taken a wide run down the back straight on the final circuit, he explained this was to avoid getting boxed in, and to keep a competitive position.

He further added that having been well placed turning for home, he felt the gelding blow up as the leaders quickened away, so he rode Bhutan (IRE) hands and heels to the line.

The trainer’s representative stated that he was satisfied with the ride and that it accorded with the instructions given.

Following the race, Harry Cobden reported that Moabit (GER), placed fourth, suffered interference approaching the home bend on the final circuit.
