A open looking contest and 20/1 shot Step It Up proved best when just piping perpetual runner-up Herotozero.

A drop back in trip and a change in tactics proved the key according to winning trainer Michael Halford. The handler reported that his charge had run freely under top-weight when well beaten over six here last week.

Held up this time, he was sixth over a furlong out and stayed on strongly to put his head in front on the line.

It was unfortunate for Herotozero, who has done nothing wrong once again but just emerged on the wrong side.

He needed a gap to appear in the final furlong and when it came he answered the call and looked sure to claim his first victory but the photo told a different story.

The fastest finisher was Romeo's On Fire, who missed the break and only had a couple behind two furlongs out.

He moved closer over a furlong out and was flying home on the outside to claim third.

Radiator Rooney is a consistent sort and ran another sound race. He had every chance in third a furlong out and stuck on well.

Gower had helped cut out the pace but had no more to offer close home after being headed inside the final furlong.

Fellow pacesetter Paris Sue faded away in the final furlong while Just For Mary arrived with every chance a furlong out but faded in the closing stages.
