An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Joly Maker (IRE), ridden by Kevin Brogan, and trained by Jonjo O’Neill, which was held up towards the rear throughout and appeared to be ridden with exaggerated hold-up tactics from approaching the home bend until jumping the second last fence, from which point the gelding stayed on evenly to finish fourth of eleven, beaten by 11 lengths.

The rider was interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Brogan stated that his instructions were to take his time, ensuring that Joly Maker (IRE) was produced with one late run and to obtain the best possible placing.

He explained that the gelding travelled satisfactorily, although his jumping was not entirely fluent at times on this occasion.

Brogan added that he was particularly conscious of Joly Maker (IRE) not finishing its race off, and for this reason chose to squeeze and nudge the gelding along conservatively in the early part of the home straight as a method of gradually building momentum and keeping the gelding interested.

He further added that after being placed under maximum pressure having jumped the second last fence, Joly Maker (IRE) had only stayed on one-paced to the line and in his opinion may appreciate being stepped up in trip, a fact that was conveyed to Mr.

O'Neill in the post-race telephone debrief.

His explanation was noted.

Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that Caro Des Flos (FR), placed fifth, lost its left-fore shoe and James Best reported that Right Royals Day (GB), which was pulled up before the fourth last fence, lost its action.
