After shedding his maiden tag on start number ten last time, Cape Wolfe put up a nice performance to follow-up and defy top-weight under Colin Keane in the Leopardstown Summer Music And Racing Festival Handicap.
Owner Sean Jones, trainer Ger Lyons, and indeed Keane had no luck in the first with market-leader Mint Chai but it was a different story here as Cape Wolfe improved to challenge between horses a furlong out.
The Piccolo gelding was soon in front and he went on to hold the staying-on Lily's Rainbow by a length.
Money horses, market-leader, Hunt (9/2 this morning into 5/2), and Emperor Bob could do no better than fifth and last respectively.
"He's after getting a lot of confidence having gotten his head in front for the first time at Dundalk," said Shane Lyons, representing his brother Ger.
"He loves that fast ground and it justifies Ger's decision not to sell him. He was in the London Sale but he knew he would be a nice horse for that type of ground.
"Colin said he has gotten so much confidence from Dundalk that there could be a nice one in him over a mile or a little further."
C. O'Donoghue, rider of Lily's Rainbow trained by Mrs Denise Foster, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount hung left inside the final furlong.
