"It was an average race and a good opportunity," said Pat Smullen after bringing home even money favourite Orangey Red by nine and a half lengths in the Coral.ie European Breeders Fund Median Auction Fillies Maiden at Limerick.
The Moyglare Stud Farm-owned and Dermot Weld-trained daughter of Lawman made all, she asserted well over a furlong out, and she stayed on well inside the last after being pushed out by Smullen. Evening Hush filled the runner-up position.
"She was race-fit and it was best to keep it simple but you get exaggerated distances on that ground - it is really deep and testing," added Smullen.
The Stewards enquired into an incident early in the straight involving Evening Hush, ridden by S. Foley, placed second and Flying Fairies ridden by G.F. Carroll, placed fourth (dead heat), where it appeared that Flying Fairies caused interference when manoeuvering out to challenge. Evidence was heard from the riders concerned. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that the incident was caused by G.F. Carroll riding carelessly and consequently suspended him for 1 raceday having taken his good recent record into consideration.
K.J. Condon, trainer of Evening Hush, reported to the Turf Club Veterinary Officer prior to the running of this race that his charge was showing signs of coming in season.
