The David Marnane-trained Poet's Pride swooped down the stand's side to run out a cosy winner of the second division of the six-furlong contest at Dundalk.

Declan McDonogh held his mount up before producing him to challenge widest of all in the straight.

The eight-year-old got to the front inside the final furlong and was pulling away at the line to record a length-and-three-quarters success over Theriverrunsdeep

13/2 shot Poet's Pride was recording a fifth career victory and his first win since March 2021.

McDonogh had been narrowly denied in the previous heat on Tynamite for Marnane and he said:

"I thought I was up about a short head and got beaten a nose! It's a funny angle.

"I was drawn 13 and I was drawn four on the last one.

"He needs pace to run at. He can be too keen for his own good sometimes and he was the last day - he got no cover and did too much.

"I dropped back a bit today and got a bit of cover even though I was three wide. He stayed up the outside and he picked up brilliantly.

"What draw you have is crucial around here - if you go forward from a wide draw, sometimes here you can burn up too much. When you are inside, you have a ground-saving run, but then they say there is a bias on the outside. I don't believe that, I think it depends on the animal."
