On His Own emerged as a leading contender for the John Smith’s Grand National after routing his 17 rivals in the €80,000 Goffs Thyestes Handicap Chase at Gowran Park.

One of four runners in the race for Champion trainer Willie Mullins, David Casey had the Graham Wylie-owned gelding up with the pace throughout and took command from two out.

The eight-year-old son of Presenting, a 10/1 chance, had the three miles feature in safe keeping before the last, and Casey could afford to ease right down on the run-in and still record a 13 length victory over first reserve Tullintain (12/1).

The 50/1 outsider Jadanli was a half-length further back in third, with Adams Island (7/1) completing the placings in fourth.

Mullins and Casey teamed up to land the "Thyestes" with subsequent Grand National winner Hedgehunter in 2004, and not surprisingly the Aintree spectacular is again on the horizon.

After recording a fourth success in the race, Mullins said “This horse looks like a real Aintree type in the making, and he may have one more run before the National.

"David got a fantastic tune out of him as he jumped from fence to fence. He’s always been a super sub for us.

“He disappointed at Leopardstown and had to go out and prove himself today. He got a bad break at Leopardstown, so all I said to David was get him away quick and see what he does,” added Mullins.

A delighted Casey, partnering his third Thyestes winner, said, “He jumped like a buck and they went a real good gallop. A light weight helped and I gave him a breather at the top of the hill.

”I looked around at the last and couldn't believe how far I was clear! He's a big, strong horse and, being by Presenting, should be suited by better ground."

On His Own has been introduced at 25/1 for the John Smith’s Grand National by Stan James, while Boylesports go 20/1.
