Awtaad looks set to head straight to the Irish 2,000 Guineas after an impressive return to action in the Plusvital Madrid Handicap at the Curragh.
Kevin Prendergast 's charge, who won a Leopardstown maiden on the second of two starts last season, was allotted top-weight for the seven furlong contest on his handicap debut.
Chris Hayes sent his mount into the lead a furlong-and-a-half from home and the 5/1 shot powered clear in the closing stages for a five length success.
“He's a very nice horse. He was a bit backward last year when he only ran twice. He was third here and then won at Leopardstown. He made good progress over the winter,” said Prendergast.
“He's a very big strong horse and when he gets better ground he'll be better.
“I think we'll keep him now for the Irish Guineas and if he gets better ground there he should be thereabouts.
“He's in the Guineas trial in three weeks and we'll see how he progresses but the way he came up there first time today he might not need another run.
“We'll see how he runs in the Irish Guineas and he's in both the Derbys. I'll have to talk to the boss.”
