Rookie trainer Patrick Foley continued a family tradition in winning a Fairyhouse feature race today, with Rebel Gold providing him with big-race glory in the €80,000 Dan & Joan Moore Memorial Chase.
Rebel Gold's previous win was in January 2021 and today, under Denis O'Regan, justified strong support (morning 14/1 — 5/1) when beating last year's winner Dunvegan by nine lengths.
It was a breakthrough success for Foley whose father Tom Foley trained famed Danoli to a maiden hurdle and Hatton's Grace Hurdle win, defeating Doran's Pride, in thrilling races at the racecourse during the 1990s.
Foley, who took over the trainer's license upon his father's passing in February 2021, reported “that was a great thrill and myself and my father always thought this lad had a big race in him.
“He was the last winner my father had in Gowran so it is extra special to win a big one.
“We were so unlucky that he hadn't won a big one by now, he'd been placed so many times. He's so consistent and the handicapper hasn't always been easy on him. Whatever happens after today, it doesn't matter, it's a bonus.”
He added “he jumps and travels and any jockey that rides him comes back with a smile on their face - they get such a thrill from him. He's a pleasure to train because he's the most straightforward horse you'll come across.
“We went for the Leopardstown Chase last year and really thought he'd get the trip, as it turned out he didn't really. We might go back for it though, ride him differently and try to creep into it. He deserved to win a big one, I'm delighted for the horse and delighted for the owners.”
Regarding his family-run yard, Foley said “we have about 15 in at the minute and the flat horses are starting back. Thankfully the numbers have actually picked up a good bit and things are looking up at home and this will help.
“We have some very good owners and a lovely bunch of four-year-olds coming forward. I'm really looking forward to this season.”
