Strong even money favourite Rocky Bleier appeared to do too much too soon on the front end in the Munsboro Maiden Hurdle at Roscommon, and it was left to the 97-rated Edith Somerville to get off the mark on her eighth racecourse outing.
Rocky Bleier had no more to give approaching the straight and the two and a half miler soon boiled down to a battle between three, the Andrew Lynch-partnered Edith Somerville (13/2 into 11/2), second favourite Time For Action and Moylisha Tim
It was the Sabrina Harty-trained Edith Somerville that did enough over the closing three hurdles to keep Time For Action at bay by two and three parts of a length with three lengths to Moylisha Tim in third.
"That was good against the boys and she'll only improve and she loves racing," enthused the successful handler.
"She'll jump a fence in time as she is a big mare and she'll be nice next year.
"I was going to give her her holidays last week but when I saw the forecast I'd said I'd run her here. She will be let off now unless this weather continues."
The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Rocky Bleier (GB), trained by Alan Fleming, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be distressed and blowing hard post race.
A.P. Heskin, rider of Rocky Bleier (GB) trained by Alan Fleming, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount ran too free during the early stages of this race.
K.C. Sexton, rider of Milanesque trained by Paul W. Flynn, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount lost his action in running and was pulled up.
