The Harry Rogers trained Gandolfini followed up on his recent win at Cork after he landed the opening race at Navan, the Derrrinstown Stud Apprentice Handicap in the hands of Daryl Byrne.

Promising 7lb claimer Daryl Byrne sent the son of Rossini to the front under one furlong out and kept on well for a one length win over Airspace

Winning trainer Rogers said afterwards: “He’s a nice horse and he deserved that and it’s great for Daryl.

"There’s not really a whole lot left for him on the grass and I’d say the handicapper might have caught up with him.”

“There might be a race in Dundalk we’ll have a look but he’ll put away then until next season.”

Byrne who is continuing his good run recorded his fourth win from four rides aboard the 5/1 favourite Gandolfini.
