The Richard O’Brien trained Beach Bar was the well backed winner of the Win Big With Tote Handicap at Leopardstown today, doing so almost a day ‘late’ having also been the subject of a failed punt at Cork on his previous start.
The six year old son of Azamaour was having his first start for O’Brien at Cork on October 14 when backed late on, from 33/1 on track in to an 8/1 shot, but failed to spark when finishing last of 12 runners.
Today he attracted further support and having been a 14/1 chance this morning, was returned an 8/1 chance when winning well under jockey Sean Davis.
Co Limerick based O’Brien wasn’t present but afterwards Davis said “it was his first run for Richard the last day and he just wanted to see how he was as he has a tendency to be a bit tricky.
“He just wanted to give him a run to see what way he'd carry on and he just got a little bit tired but today he was fit and well.
“The plan was to jump and make the running but the lads got out ahead of me and made the running. I was happy enough once I got him to relax - he was taken down nice and early (to the start) as he has a history and it's better safe than sorry.”
“He travelled away and I was never really in doubt but when I got there I was waiting for something to come and peg me.“
