Black Label made a successful return to hurdling, as he sprang a 14/1 surprise in the Limerick's Live 95FM Handicap Hurdle.

Without a win since November of 2016, the Adrian McGuinness trained seven-year-old had his last ten runs on the level, finishing a close-up fourth on his most recent start at Leopardstown a week ago.

Soon settled in mid-division, the son of Medicean was seventh from three out, and made good progress into second before the next.

He was ridden approaching that flight and had a good battle with Torquay from there, getting on top in the closing stages before going on to score by two and a half lengths.

The Eric McNamara trained runner-up was returned at 7/1 under McNamara's son Conor, while 33/1 chance Brogine was another six lengths back in third. Castle Howard was sent off the 7/4 favourite and he finished fourth.

STEWARDS REPORTS

The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board Veterinary Officer examined An'ball (FR), trained by Ray Hackett, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be post race normal.

The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of An'ball (FR), ridden by S.E. Lewis, and trained by Ray Hackett. Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned. S.E. Lewis, stated that his instructions were to jump off to make it and try to run his best race possible. He said his mount came back under him after jumping the first and second hurdle and was unable to get his mount to travel during the race thereafter. Ray Hackett, confirmed the instructions given. He said his charge lost ground after backing off the first and second hurdle and seemed to struggle from there. He added his charge does come off the bridle during a race and stay on in the closing stages. He added that with a stronger ride his charge may have finished closer. The Stewards received evidence from the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board Senior handicapper and also received a report from the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board Veterinary Officer who stated that the animal was post race normal. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.

D.N. Russell, rider of Rio Lobo trained by Henry de Bromhead, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount hung and finished lame.
