Batcio recorded a fourth career win under rules when getting well on top in the closing stages to land the Adare Manor Opportunity Handicap Chase at Wexford.
Shane O’Callaghan’s mount stumbled after three out but was soon in front and shrugged off the challenge of Zarkareva at the last.
The 8/1 chance drew clear on the run-in to beat that rival by seven and a half lengths, with Ingleby Mackenzie a further 15 lengths away in third.
There was a nasty looking incident at the first where Our Dougal slid into the fence resulting in the Simon Torrens-ridden Calthor somersaulting dramatically through the air. Sadly both horses were lost.
Winning trainer Ted Walsh said, "He was well-entitled to do that. He was second in a valuable race at Leopardstown, Adrian Keatley's horse (Drumconnor Lad) beat him. Then he fell the next day at the second last when he was still in with a chance. He ran well with Aubrey at Navan and might have been a bit keen at Tramore the last day.
"They went such a good gallop up front that when he got to them, they were empty. He wouldn't want the ground any quicker than that.
"He is a grand horse and I'm delighted for Shane and even more pleased for Luke (McMahon, owner)."
