Tradewinds recorded his first success since joining the Michael Hourigan yard as he took the Awards And Gifts Yellow Sam 40th Anniversary (Qualified Riders) Handicap Hurdle.

Formerly trained in the UK the French bred son of Kapgarde won a bumper at Kempton in 2013 when trained by Nick Henderson and owned by Michael Buckley.

Fourth on his debut for Hourigan at Killarney in May he was third on his next two starts before finishing a decent seventh to Argentino in a competitive handicap at Killarney last Saturday.

Turned out again quickly he was sent off a 10/1 (opened at 14's last night and from 12's on-course) chance under Johnny Barry.

Settled behind the leaders he was third with a circuit to race and improved to dispute the lead after the fourth last.

He was ridden after three out and hit the front before the final flight, keeping on well on the run-in to score by three lengths. Na Trachtalai Abu (9/2) was second under Derek O'Connor for James Motherway while Dom Lukka (14/1) was seven lengths back in third under Richie Deegan for Liz Doyle. New Kid In Town was sent off the 11/4 favourite and he finished a disappointing sixth after attempting to make all. Top Of The Town (6/1 to 9/2) was well-backed on-course and he was fifth under Eoin O'Connell for Charles Byrnes.

Laura Hourigan, daughter of Michael, said afterwards: "The owner (Colin Gray) is based in America and called us one day and gave us two horses. He's been there or thereabouts with horses but I think that's his first winner.

"All this horse does is keep galloping and he has been unlucky on his last few runs. He's in the sales at Doncaster."

STEWARDS REPORT

Mr F. Maguire, rider of Viaduct Joey trained by Terence O'Brien, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount lost his action and pulled up lame.
