After scoring with Muzak last Tuesday, John Monroe was among the winners again at Roscommon this evening, as his Royal Run sprang a 66/1 shocker in the Four Roads Mares Maiden Hurdle.
Ridden by Roger Loughran, the four-year-old daughter of Royal Anthem showed little on her two starts before today, finishing well beaten in conditions hurdles at Ballinrobe.
Having opened at 50/1 on-course, she drifted out to 66/1 at the off, and she made virtually all, fending off the challenge of Mutiska (9/2) in the straight to score by a length and a half at the line. Mrs Mac Veale finished back in third under John Cullen for Robert Murphy at 10/1, while Myblueeyedgirl the 7/2 favourite, could only manage a well-beaten fifth under Fergal Harford for Gillian Callaghan (subsequently disqualified as Harford failed to weigh-in).
A delighted John Monroe said afterwards: "She is a lovely filly, very genuine and honest.
"I have the dam and some of her brothers and sisters as well so this is great.
"I knew she would run well and I had a bet on her."
The winner is out of Runfar, who ran sixty-four times for Monroe, winning twice at Ballinrobe and Roscommon respectively.
