The going is good at both domestic meetings ahead of today’s action which sees Downpatrick hosting an afternoon jumps fixture and Flat racing at Roscommon this evening.
The feature race at Downpatrick this afternoon, the Remembering ‘Caughoo’ Handicap Chase, celebrates the shock winner of the 1947 Grand National who emerged from the mist at Aintree to score by 20 lengths at odds of 100/1 for jockey Eddie Dempsey and trainer Herbert McDowell.
Caughoo also won the Ulster Grand National at Downpatrick in both 1945 and 1946.
This afternoon’s extended 2m1f event has attracted ten runners with Rippon Lodge representing the in-form John Ryan yard, and Henry de Bromhead’s Sani Pass disputing favouritism this morning at around 3/1.
The first of seven races gets underway in Downpatrick at 1.10pm. The going remains good and the weather forecast is for a dry day with temperatures expected to reach about 18C.
Colin Keane heads to Roscommon this evening for a strong book of six rides fresh from completing the fastest century of winners in an Irish Flat season at Navan on Saturday.
The Meathman has obvious claims on Tuwaiq for his boss Ger Lyons in the opening Irish EBF Median Sires Series Race, while Eloy D’amerval, Lady Georgie and Too Bright also hold solid chances.
The eight-race Roscommon card begins at 4.10pm and the going is currently good following selective watering.
