Trainer Tony Martin warmed up for the Cheltenham Festival with a win at Leopardstown today when his Savello landed the Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Novice Chase.
Seven to four favourite Rupert Lamb (a second faller on the day for Ruby Walsh) was a faller at hafway but Savello, carrying Champion Jockey Davy Russell and also successfully carrying a hood for the second time in two runs, stayed on well in the straight to defeat The Real Article by two and three parts of a length.
Afterwards Martin stated “Savello used to be very difficult and very free but the hood has helped a lot. I've always liked the way he jumped from day one though and touch wood things are coming right today. He has copped on and has grown up a lot having been was very stupid last year.
“I'd say that is his ideal distance (2m1f) but he could step up half a mile - I thought he was a handicapper in amongst novices today.”
Regarding Cheltenham prospects, Martin added “I've a few nice horses running – I've Beneficient running int he Arkle or the Jewson and both Blackmail and Golantilla in the bumper. Golantilla is a good horse and I'm very sweet in him. I was very impressed with his win at Cork and I'd sat he's a good one.
“I've also Ted Veale for a handicap and also Victrix Gale for handicap if she gets in. Saddlers Storm ran well in the Cross-Country Race there last year and ran well today.”
