The Cheltenham Festival
The Cheltenham Festival is one of the most celebrated horse racing events in the world. Rich in history, it is where champions have battled it out for centuries to win some of the most coveted prizes of the National Hunt season.
Excitement and anticipation are high as horses, trainers and jockeys compete in 28 races over four days, including 14 Grade 1 contests. The showpiece of the Cheltenham Festival is the Gold Cup and it is the race that everyone wants to win. Arkle, Desert Orchid and Kauto Star are among the greats to have won the blue riband event.
The Prestbury Cup celebrates the friendly rivalry between Ireland and Britain and runs until either country has 14 winners or more. Ireland has dominated at recent Festivals, dazzling the home team with their formidable firepower.

The Cheltenham Festival is held every year over four days in the middle of March. Cheltenham week 2024, takes place from Tuesday 12 March to Friday 15 March.
What is the Cheltenham Festival?
The Cheltenham Festival is the showpiece of the National Hunt season. It is at Cheltenham races where the very best horses, trainers and jockeys go head to head and where champions are crowned. There are 28 races in total, seven on each day, and it comprises four championship races; the Champion Hurdle, the Champion Chase, the Stayers’ Hurdle and the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Where is the Cheltenham Festival held?
Cheltenham races are held at Cheltenham Racecourse, also known as Prestbury Park. The racecourse is situated five minutes from the town centre.
How do I get to the Cheltenham Festival?
Birmingham and Bristol are the nearest airports and are easily accessible to and from Cheltenham Racecourse. Those travelling to Cheltenham races by train will need to book a ticket to Cheltenham Spa which is the nearest train station. A bus runs regularly from the train station to the racecourse. If you travel by car, you can book car parking for £15 in advance.
When does the Cheltenham Festival start?
The first race of Cheltenham 2024 kicks off at 1.30 p.m. on Tuesday 12 March. The opener is the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle which is famous for the Cheltenham ‘roar’ as the crowd goes wild at the off.
What is the dress code for the Cheltenham Festival?
Racegoers are advised to dress for the weather which can be unpredictable in March. Gentlemen wear a suit and ladies dress smart in hospitality or in the Club enclosure. Wearing suitable footwear to Cheltenham races is also recommended as various car parks are located on grass.
How many people attend the Cheltenham Festival?
2023 saw a slightly lower attendance than 2022, with 241,600 people attending over the four days. For this year’s Festival, attendance has been capped at 68,500 people per day.
