Gavin Cromwell rounded off a successful week when completing a 15/1 double at Punchestown this afternoon with Will The Wise in the Lawlor’s Of Naas Flat Race.
The Danestown trainer, on the mark earlier over the banks with Stumptown was bringing his winning tally to five at Punchestown this week which included valuable successes with Backtonormal and Brides Hill.
Jacob’s Ladder looked set to land this bumper when asserting over a furlong out but Will The Wise, a point-to-point winner for Andy Slattery at Turtulla last November, finished strongly under Declan Lavery.
The 11/4 chance, available at 8/1 overnight and supported on track from 11/2, got up on the line for a short-head verdict with Minella Post three and a quarter lengths back in third.
Cromwell said, “He’s weak and will be a good horse when he gets to jump fences.
“Deccy said the pace was very stop/start and he was only getting going at the finish.
“He’d been going nicely at home and we ran him in a schooling bumper last week.
“That’s him gone now for the summer and he’ll go hurdling later in the year.”
