The 85/40 favourite Trebizond got up on the line to win the Boyle Maiden Hurdle under Dylan Robinson.
The son of Golden Horn was settled in mid-division but seemed to have plenty to do early in the home straight with three to jump.
Henry de Bromhead’s charge had improved into a close fourth when not fluent at the last and, without his rider needing to go for the whip, he ran on well to beat Custers Mistake (22/1) by a head with the long-time leader King Lenox (50/1) just a neck further back in third.
Unraced for Godolphin before being bought for 34,000 pounds by current connections, the well-bred winner is a sibling of Group 2 winners Bonfire and Joviality.
Runner-up on his previous two outings at Tramore and Wexford, he was getting off the mark at the fifth time of asking over hurdles.
Robinson remarked: “He ran a cracker. We rode him for a bit of toe today as he has plenty of gears.
“Coming to the last I thought I had it in the bag but he missed the last. In fairness he picked up for me and galloped to the line. I'm delighted with him.
“He deserved that. He was unlucky in Tramore where he was a bit green and ran around the place. He made amends today.”
