Champion Amateur Jockey Patrick Mullins returned from a trip to Australia with a winner on his first ride back when his own Dr Schultz (10/11f), trained by his father Willie Mullins, landed the concluding Mullingar Bumper at Kilbeggan this evening.
The Gordon Elliott trained Just Eile was the subject of a significant late plunge from 3/1 into 5/4 second favourite in the race but ran dreadfully, eventually finishing last well behind Dr Schultz. The winner stretched well clear of his rivals in the closing stages, scoring a dozen length win over Cool As A Breeze
Mullins Senior wasn't present but the winning jockey later reported “I only came back on Tuesday having spent a month in Australia, touring the East Coast with his cousin Emmet Mullins. We'd a great time and it's nice to be back with a winner.”
He added “we ran him (Dr Schultz) back too quick after Punchestown and he'll be a fun summer horse who should win a hurdle or two.”
