An enterprising ride from Wayne Lordan on Awakened Spirit reaped dividends in the two-year-old maiden at Tipperary over five furlongs.
Lordan was drawn in 10 and was the only horse to race along the standside rail. He was prominent throughout and in the final furlong held a lead over Red Queen (11/1) on the far side which was a length and a half at the line.
David Wachman’s filly was nicely backed at the track from 13/2 to 5/1. Jim Bolger’s Leargas went off 11/10 favourite but disappointed in fifth.
“That’s Fracas’s [sire] first runner and first winner. He was fourth in the Derby for me. He was a good tough horse and he could still make it yet as a stallion,” David Wachman said.
“This filly is not EBF qualified so her options were limited and we had to run her first time in Pontefract.
“I didn’t give Wayne any instructions, but I was surprised he was the only one to come over this side as its usually the side to be on when the ground is soft.
“She’s quite a nice filly and we’ll have a few more options now she has won her maiden.” Howdoyoufindthered came in third for Willie McCreery and Ronan Whelan at 3/1.
