Kilflora grinds out success in opener
Kilflora proved too strong for hotpot Killultagh Queen as he edged out the mare in the opening Templemore Beginners Chase at Thurles.
The 4/6 favourite hit the lead turning for home in the 2m2f event but Brian O'Connell always had her in his sights aboard Kilflora.
Philip Fenton 's charge travelled the best of the pair as they locked horns after the second last and kept on gamely when asked to pick up on the run-in, wearing down Killultagh Queen for a half-length victory.
The son of Alflora had shown progressive form in three chase starts before today and had run well when third to Shirley Casper at Naas last time.
He had attracted some support in the morning (from 7/1 into 5/1) and was sent off 9/2 second choice.
"That was grand. The better ground was in his favour and he jumps well," said Fenton afterwards.
"He should develop into an ok chaser but we won't aim too high. He found plenty off the bridle today. He'll stay on the go."
